Profile:
Gérard Galler is Project Officer
with the European Commission, Directorate-General
Information Society. He is responsible for the
funding and follow-up of research projects on
IT security in general and more specifically smart
cards and secure financial transactions. His other
duty is to ensure the success of eEurope Smart
Cards. Before joining the Commission in 1998,
he managed computing projects in various industrial
contexts: electronic purse, space, transport,
metallurgy or environment. His background is Electrical
Engineering (U. of Brussels). He holds a MSc in
Artificial Intelligence (U. of Essex) and a MSc
in Environmental Sciences (U. of Brussels).

“e-Security Actions and Initiatives”
The audience will be updated on four EU initiatives
related to eSecurity with a special
focus on eGovernment:
- The Council resolution on network and information
security of January 2002
recommends awareness raising on IT security,
standards for certification, computer emergency
response teams, open source software for eGovernment,
etc.
- The eEurope 2005 action plan calls for services,
applications and content for online public services
and eBusiness as well as for a widespread infrastructure
providing security and broadband access.
- The Information Society Technology Programme
(IST) sets out the priorities, within the 6th
“Framework Programme”, for research,
technological development and demonstration
in information and communication technologies.
- The eTEN Programme financially supports the
roll-out of trans-European innovative services
and network based applications.
