Nearly three years ago, in Cracow, we talked about this with Jerzy Stuhr: he who emigrates undergoes a geographic-cultural explantation meaning to be put on the last steps of that social ladder of the country which "welcomes" them. But for many years now, the citizens of the host country undergo an impoverishment process, a "re-positioning" in the bracket of consumption and income which are a result of a macro-economic re-organization in which the human capital must be purged from he who is too much, unprofitable, not compatible. This fierce mechanism puts foreigners and the new poor in the condition to share the same physical spaces and the same anguish and to carry out civilization clashes in places of exclusion. These people excluded from the wellbeing are the "discarded individuals" of the beginning of this century, superfluous in a society where the excluded is forced to any stratagem to survive and to hope. The "superfluous" human beings for us are today's Emigrants. No longer just those who "go from the south to the north of the world", but all those who have to go over the practicability of their values and their desires, to put at stake their own identity, to live an existence suspended in an antechamber condition constantly awaiting some "deus ex machina" to free them. After thirty-five years from the first performance, Jerzy Stuhr directs the new staging with two Italian actors, today thirty-five-year-olds Massimiliano Poli and Angelo Romagnoli. The collaboration between Stuhr and the two actors opens an itinerary of artistic and human research comparing who has lived as a direct witness of the start of the theatrical history of this text and a new generation of actors who find it emblematic.
