To say Carmen is like saying extreme passion, sensual pleasure, strength and instinct. Carmen is the sun of the south, the happy desperation of possessing only oneself and ones own freedom. My Carmen, perhaps, is only this. Imagined on the island of Lampedusa, island in the south for the rich and bored Europe, mythical north for hundreds of desperate people and refugees on the run who knows from where and who knows for how long. These are stories which are under our eyes from morning till night. Today Carmen can be a Sudanese, a Kurd, an Afghan, a Kosovar, a Pakistani and is not afraid to risk everything for her own freedom. She is a young woman who, like a lioness, knows she is strong, beautiful, powerful and free. Carmen knows that she is rich with that wealth which cannot be bought. But, on the other hand, it is the man - Don Josè who is a coward, imprisoned in his bureaucratic and safe armour of a western male who has everything to lose against he who has nothing to lose. And then there is Escamillo of Bizet's opera. The great bullfighter. The "macho", we would say today. Another extraordinary portrait of an archetype character. The man of success, the man of ephemeral glory. All in all, the superficial man. The story ends with Carmen's death. But why don't we ask what happens to Don Josè? Who is the real loser? Who dies or who remains alive, killed in the soul, in faith, in pride, in hope?
